[인물소개]

Elvis Presley  (1935.1.8~1977.8.16)  1935년 1월 8일에 미국 미시시피주의 이스트 투플로에서태어난 엘비스 프레슬리(Elvis Presley)는 록큰롤의 역사를 이룩하여 놓은 로큰롤의 제왕이다.   엘비스는 종교적인 분위기를 부모로부터 배우면서 성장했다. 엘비스 가족은 1948년에 멤피스로 이사했으며, 그곳에서 학교를 졸업했다. 1953년경에는 크라운 일렉트릭 회사의 트럭 운전사로 일하면서 자신의 노래를 녹음하여 집으로 보내던 엘비스 프레슬리는, 어머니에게 생일 선물로 주기 위해 4달러 짜리 자작 레코드를 만들고자 선(Sun) 레코드사를 찾았는데, 선 레코드사의 경영자인 샘 필립스(Sam Phillips)는 엘비스의 노래를 들어 보고 곧 그를 스카웃하여 몇곡의 노래를 취입하였다.   그후, 유명한 칸츄리 뮤직 매니저였던 톰 파커(Tom Parker)와 손을 잡고 RCA 레코드사와 전속 계약을 맺었다. RCA 레코드사에서 발표한 데뷰 싱글 ＜Heartbreak Hotel＞은 젊은 팬들에게 대단한 인기를 얻어냈다. 박력 있고 섹스 어필하는 자신 특유의 스타일로 노래하던 엘비스 프레슬리는, ‘엉덩이의 마술사’란 소리를 들을 정도로 무대 위에서의 제스쳐는 청소년들에게 사랑을 받으며 10대들의 우상으로 군림하였다. 1956년에는 영화 『Love Me Tender』에 출연하면서부터 계속해서 여러 차례 영화에 출연한 엘비스는, 10대들 뿐만 아니라 남녀노소를 막론하고 어느 누구도 그를 모르는 사람이 없을 정도였다. 1967년 5월 1일, 엘비스는 프리실라 뷰리우(Priecilla Beaulieu)와 결혼해 한명의 딸을 두기도 했지만, 1973년에 이혼을 했다. 이때부터 엘비스는 정신적인 타격을 입었으며, 건강이 악화되어 갔다. 여기에 마약까지 복용하는 등 최악의 건강 상태를 유지하던 엘비스 프레슬리는, 1977년 8월 16일 멤피스 침례병원에서 42세의 젊은 나이로 사망했다.  . ▷자료출처 [네이버 지식백과] 엘비스 프레슬리 [Elvis Presley] (팝스타소사전, 삼호뮤직)
